Train chaos on Usedom: complete closure from November 24th, that's what travelers need to know!
In the near future, rail travelers on the Baltic Sea island of Usedom will have to expect significant restrictions. From Monday, November 24th, 4:30 a.m. to Thursday, November 27th, 11:59 p.m., the regional train line RB23 between Wolgast and Trassenheide will be completely closed. The reason for this interruption is urgently needed repair work on a level crossing, which is not insignificant. This of course has an impact on travelers who want to make their way to the picturesque island. Northern Courier reports that a replacement bus service will be set up during the closure.
The replacement buses run from Wolgast Bahnhof, Wolgast Bahnhofstraße I, Mahlzow Wendeplatz, Mölschow Friedhof to Trassenheide Bahnhof. Buses leave every hour from Wolgast between 4:33 a.m. and 11:33 p.m. and from Trassenheide on the hour from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. This regulation gives travelers a reasonable opportunity to continue their journey. However, you have to be prepared for a slightly longer journey time; The journey by bus takes around 14 minutes, which is three minutes longer than by train. Particular attention should also be paid to the transport of bicycles, wheelchairs and strollers, which is only possible to a limited extent.
Rail transport is changing
Especially in times of climate change, rail has become more important as an environmentally friendly means of transport. Shifting passenger and freight transport to rail could help to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions. Before the corona pandemic, we had experienced an increase in the number of passengers and goods transported by rail. But there is a significant investment backlog in the German rail network. The Statista shows that per capita investments in rail infrastructure in this country lag behind those of countries such as Switzerland and Austria.
The federal government has taken measures to promote sustainable mobility. These include a reduction in VAT for long-distance rail transport and an increase in flight tax. In addition, significantly higher investments should be made in rail transport in order to further increase the attractiveness of the railway and make rail travel even more environmentally friendly.
Amid these changes, travelers are also asked to actively inform themselves about upcoming changes. The new timetables are available online at bahn.de and in a PDF file. Hopefully nothing will stand in the way of a relaxing trip to the beautiful island of Usedom!
