Border controls from Monday: This is how the rules are changing in MV!

From Monday, July 7th, the air on the German-Polish border in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will be noticeably thicker. The announced border controls are intended to bring this region into greater focus for an initial 30 days. Drivers and cyclists in particular have to be prepared for restrictions - roadways and some important bicycle and shipping routes will be closed. Even new speed limits are being introduced to keep traffic safe around checkpoints, like the Baltic Sea newspaper reported. Over 400 emergency services will be deployed to carry out the checks, which will take place at random.

Important for travelers: An identification document, be it a passport or an ID card, is essential to cross the border. Despite the restrictions, passage remains possible at 19 points, including all border crossings in Świnoujście. However, cyclists have to be prepared for closures on popular cycle routes in Barnimslow, Kolbitzow and Pargow. There are also restrictions on waterways, especially on the Oder. In addition, disruptions to controls can result in severe fines of up to 1,000 zlotys (around 235 euros), while public disruptions or organizing illegal immigration can be punished with prison sentences of up to eight years.

Current developments on migration

The introduction of such comprehensive controls causes a stir insofar as... NDR reports that irregular migration at the border has been decreasing noticeably for months. For example, in January 2025, the federal police only registered 72 unauthorized entries between Pomellen and Ahlbeck - a significant decrease compared to the 116 entries in the same month of the previous year. Possible causes include the cold season and the increased fortification of the Belarusian-Polish border with fences and barbed wire.

The daily news emphasizes that the overall picture of unauthorized entries in Germany also looks positive thanks to the new controls. Before stationary controls were revived, more than 700 unauthorized entries were often registered at various borders every day. The number has now fallen to under 300, which is a clear trend increase.

Limit markings and safety aspects

However, not all measures appear to be unproblematic. Local residents have already attempted to police the borders on their own, which could lead to tensions and conflicts. The district public prosecutor's office in Stettin has started investigations into incidents on the border between Ahlbeck and Świnoujście. Aside from these challenges, the aim of the controls is seen as important: to combat illegal immigration and smuggling without placing too much strain on the daily lives of local residents or affecting the movement of goods.

Another positive sign is that despite the strict controls and increased security measures, the decline in illegal migration can also be seen in other regions of Germany. Immigration policy, even though it is controversial, seems to have long since not only had a local impact, but also set an entire country in motion. The coming weeks will therefore set the tone for the border management strategy of Germany and its neighbors.
