District road between Loitz and Düvier: renovation in sight from 2028!
Concern about the road conditions in Western Pomerania-Greifswald is becoming ever louder. This is also the case with district road 8 between Loitz and Düvier, which urgently needs renovation after more than 35 years. Residents estimate that the road is in a condition that is almost 50 years old. Reason enough for the Vorpommern-Greifswald district to take measures and renew the road in the 2026/2027 double budget, like this Baltic Sea newspaper reported.
The problems have been apparent for some time. Large holes and hills of tree roots make the journey hellish. Commuters are looking for alternatives during the closure of federal highway 194 between Poggendorf and Loitz, thereby putting a strain on the already dilapidated district road. This year, potholes have already had to be patched and tree care work has to be carried out. The mayor of Loitz, Christin Witt, listens to residents' concerns and forwards their complaints to the responsible authorities.
Aging road surfaces and growing insecurity
District Administrator Michael Sack (CDU) has recognized this problem and is aware of the poor condition of many district roads. He still plans to travel the region and recently visited Jarmen-Tutow to get a first-hand look. In discussions with mayors and local administrations, the state of transport connections and roads in the region were high on the agenda. The condition of the roads, especially in the border area with the Mecklenburg Lake District, is more than worrying Northern Courier describes.
Particularly highlighted are roads such as the VG104 between Kartlow and Alt Tellin with narrow lanes made of old concrete slabs or the VG105, where shifting natural stone pavement makes driving a challenge. Complaints are piling up and citizens are wondering how the traffic authority will come to a solution. Mayor Elke Hempel expresses dissatisfaction with the inadequate traffic regulations and the arbitrariness that she perceives in planning and signage.
A look into the future
The willingness to change is there, but it remains to be seen whether the planned measures will actually be implemented. With a number of roads in dire need of repair, the hope is that construction work will begin soon for a better driving experience. The VG8 is one of the biggest problem children these days; A construction project for this has been announced for 2025. Citizens are keeping their fingers crossed that the right priority will finally be set.
Until then, it remains to be seen how the discussions surrounding transport connections develop. A citizens' consultation with District Administrator Sack has already taken place in which he wants to give citizens the feeling that their voices are heard. Dissatisfaction with road conditions is an issue that not only concerns residents, but also calls on those responsible in the region to take action.
