Motorboat explosion off Greifswald: Two seniors injured!

On July 20, 2025, a dramatic incident occurred in the Danish Wiek near Greifswald. A motorboat exploded in the middle of the water, causing excitement and concern among people in the area. The boat, which was currently drifting towards Greifswald, sank almost completely after a deflagration on board. Two people, an 82-year-old woman and an 80-year-old man, were on board at the time and were rescued by the water rescue service and brought safely to shore. Both were injured in the incident and had to be transported to the Greifswald University Hospital.

What is particularly tragic is that the incident took place at the same time as a fishing festival was being celebrated in Greifswald. This was certainly a shock for those attending the festival who did not expect such an unexpected event.

Investigations and further measures

After the incident, temporary measures were taken to secure the sunken boat. The police and fire brigade were quickly there to monitor what was happening and to tow the boat into the port of Ladebow. At the same time, the water police have initiated an investigation to clarify the exact nature of the incident. In the course of this, proceedings for negligent bodily harm against unidentified people involved will also be started. Particular attention is drawn to the incidents that recently took place under similar circumstances on the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea coast and which pose similar dangers for boaters.

In another, very similar case of a boat accident, a captain has to answer in court. This happened almost three years after a fatal accident on Lake Ribnitz in which a motor vessel crashed into an unlit recreational boat at excessive speed, killing a 66-year-old woman. Here too, the boat driver is accused of negligent homicide and bodily harm. He will likely face up to five years in prison or a fine in court if found guilty.

What to do in boating and water accidents

Water accidents, such as those that have been occurring again and again recently, require quick action. Experts advise that immediate care for the injured and protection against dangers are the priority. In any accident, it is advisable to call the police, regardless of who was at fault. Proper documentation of the accident, including photos and personal information of those involved and witnesses, is essential in order to assert later claims. In addition, those affected should seek advice from a lawyer to protect their interests.

Above all, there is an urgent need to approach boating responsibly. Accidents could often be prevented if skippers also take visibility conditions and possible sources of danger into account when choosing the speed.
