New plasma donation center opened in Wolgast: 20 euros per donation!

The Wolgast District Hospital is now opening its doors to blood plasma donors. The newly opened plasma donation center is not just an addition, but an important branch of the renowned Greifswald Institute for Transfusion Medicine. The region and its needs are brought to the fore.

The plasma donation center is located in the former nurses' home at Chausseestraße 56. Anyone who decides to donate plasma can do so three days a week: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. A special treat for the donors: there is an expense allowance of 20 euros for every donation, and snacks and drinks are also included during the observation phase. Mayor Martin Schröter emphasizes what a benefit the establishment of this center is for Wolgast. “The center strengthens our regional supply of blood products and ensures greater safety,” he says.

Availability and need for plasma

Since modern medicine relies on blood donations, offering a plasma donation center is of great value. While advances in medicine appear to make it possible to improve many therapies, donating blood – and therefore plasma – remains essential. Plasma is the liquid component of blood and is particularly important for the treatment of burns, coagulation disorders and immune defects. It is noteworthy that frozen plasma remains stable for up to two years and can therefore provide a long-term aid in the treatment of patients.

In addition, it is pointed out that in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district alone the need for blood reserves is estimated at 20,000 annually. The center in Wolgast is operated in cooperation with the German Red Cross (DRK) in order to efficiently meet this need. This is how plasma donation works

Plasma donation is fundamentally different from whole blood donation. Here the blood is only removed in its liquid part, the plasma, while the solid components are returned to the donor. This method is called plasmapheresis and usually takes between 30 and 45 minutes. Those interested should note that they should make an appointment online in advance plasmaspende-wlg.de have to reserve.

Healthy adults aged 18 and over are allowed to donate plasma up to 60 times a year, with at least two days between donations. If you are suitable, many donations are possible each year, which not only benefits the donors but also countless patients.

This new facility in Wolgast will create a valuable platform to strengthen regional resources and make a joint contribution to healthcare. It remains to be hoped that many citizens will take the opportunity to actively help and become interested in plasma donation.
