Rescue for the Greifswald toy store: reopening in March!
A lot is happening in Greifswald: The popular toy store “Flax und Krümel” has been given a second chance thanks to new management. Experienced owner Ilona Brzozowska plans to reopen in March 2024 after the traditional business ran into difficulties due to economic challenges caused by the pandemic and online trading. “The business wouldn’t have made it without successors,” says Martina Dunker, who has been part of the team since 1992. With a fresh concept that includes small play areas for the children, the store is not only being renovated but also modernized. From January, customers' ideas will be welcome via Instagram to make the store even more child-friendly. Brzozowska, herself the mother of a nine-year-old girl, brings her experience from the catering industry, where, among other things, she managed a steak house. The city of Greifswald and local organizations are actively supporting them in saving the store. What a twist!
But not everything in Greifswald is going well. Data protection and security are always important issues in the city. A 32-year-old man is on trial for several violent crimes. The defendant, who suffers from bipolar disorder, reportedly fled a clinic before several interviews. The second day of the trial will take place on November 17th. The case not only sparks conversation among residents, but also sheds light on the challenges that young people in particular are faced with.
Students in focus
Another topic that concerns the people of Greifswald is the financial situation of students. Many of them have to work while studying to cover their living expenses. The prejudice that students are lazy is clearly refuted, because the reality is different: they often have less than 1,000 euros per month at their disposal. Given the ever-increasing cost of living, this is not an easy situation. This shows once again how important local support is.
The event is rounded off by an incident that caused unrest: a 17-year-old was attacked near a kebab shop. Relatives of several young people were slightly injured and police are appealing for information. Such incidents clearly show that safety on the streets of Greifswald remains an important issue. Local authorities are required to develop concepts and measures to avoid such situations in the future.
Growth in crafts
Greifswald remains exciting: from the rescue of a traditional toy shop to the challenges faced by students to ongoing discussions about safety and craftsmanship. It will be interesting to see how these stories will develop further. Let's keep our eyes open!
