Something is happening in the area of ​​public transport in Western Pomerania-Greifswald. An initiative of young people from the region has launched a petition to improve the “Ilse” on-call bus. The on-call bus is already appreciated by many as a valuable mobility solution for young and old. But there is still a lot of room for improvement, as Katapult MV reports.

Criticism of the inadequate public transport connections in many rural areas is not new. In particular, the operating hours of the Ilsebus, which currently range from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., are in focus: many are calling for an extension to 6:45 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Currently, passengers in the Mecklenburg Lake District can even use the on-call bus for free with the Deutschlandticket, while in Western Pomerania-Greifswald only a 10% discount is offered. Free access would not only increase the attractiveness of the Deutschlandticket, but also increase the participation of many people.

Demands on the district council

The petition, which is aimed at the Vorpommern-Greifswald district council, has clear goals: In addition to free use of the Ilsebus with the Deutschlandticket, the initiators are also calling for the expansion of operating hours and the integration of other regions such as Anklam, Greifswald and Usedom into the operating network. The young initiative brings an important issue to the table, which is not only explosive for the local population, but could also improve mobility in rural areas as a whole. According to Open Petition, people without their own car, seniors and young people are often left behind when it comes to mobility.

The challenges are particularly great in rural areas. A large proportion of the journeys are covered by car because public transport options are often unattractive. People travel long distances every day, which also affects their carbon footprint. The social urgency is evident: a lack of connectivity not only disadvantages specific population groups, but also increases migration from rural regions, as the Federal Agency for Civic Education reports.

Potential for collaboration and adaptation

One positive piece of news is that the city of Greifswald already has its own on-call bus, the “Friedrich”, in use. There could be potential for collaboration here to avoid duplicate structures. There is also a new special fund in the Bundestag that could potentially help finance the Ilsebus. The initiative sees this as a good opportunity to significantly improve mobility in rural areas.

The petition needs a total of 2,000 signatures to be introduced to the district's transportation committee. A step that is important not only for the region, but for the whole of Vorpommern-Greifswald in order to achieve better basic public transport services.

The search for effective mobility is more relevant than ever. It remains to be hoped that the desired goal will not only bring economic benefits to the committed young people, but also positive effects on the environment and social participation.
