Overfilled clothing containers in Rostock: New rules and more control!

There is currently a big problem in Rostock with overfilled used clothing containers. As nordkurier.de reports, the containers are not only often overcrowded, but also often contain prohibited items. A year ago there were over 200 containers available to citizens, now there are only 100. The Güstrow workshops have withdrawn their collection containers, which has further aggravated the situation.

The Alliance 90/The Greens faction. Volt has therefore submitted an application to improve the disposal of used clothing. Specifically, there are calls for the number of containers to be increased and the disposal intervals to be optimized. In addition, regular checks should be introduced to ensure the cleanliness of the containers and to provide information about the permitted textiles.

Rules and regulations

What is actually allowed in the containers? Clothing, shoes, bed linen, tablecloths and hats that are in good condition and packed in clean and dry bags are permitted. Anything that is dirty or damaged – including mattresses and upholstery – belongs in the trash. If old textiles are left next to the containers, they can become unusable and incur additional costs. Overfilled containers can be reported via the municipal portal Klarschiff-HRO.

From January 2025, a legal requirement for the separate collection of used textiles will come into force in Germany. This legislation is intended not only to promote reuse and recycling, but also to help reduce residual waste and strengthen the circular economy. Citizens also have the opportunity to get rid of their old textiles through second-hand shops, flea markets, online platforms or clothing swaps.

Alternatives to disposal

So where should the old clothes go? If you don't want to wait for the containers, there are many alternatives. Second-hand shops and flea markets are booming, and the Internet also offers numerous opportunities to offer old clothes for recycling. Online platforms and clothing swaps are often a good way to find a new wearer for clothes you no longer need.

The tense conditions show once again that a rethink is necessary when it comes to the disposal of old clothing. At a time when sustainability and environmental awareness are very important, it is time to adapt the regulations and introduce measures for clean and effective disposal. A good step in the right direction!
