Vacationer on Usedom: Dog bite causes excitement on the beach!
On July 20, 2023, an incident occurred on the beach between Kölpinsee and Stubbenfelde on Usedom that unsettled many vacationers. A woman was attacked there by a dog and bitten twice on the arm. The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. when the vacationer and her husband observed a couple playing with a dog. The dog had brought a stick into the water, but then a surprise attack occurred.
The dog owner tried to hold his four-legged friend back by the collar, but the dog bit the holidaymaker again. The consequences of this incident are already noticeable: a report of negligent bodily harm was filed with the Anklam police station. The incident also raises concerns about the growing problems with dogs on the beaches of Usedom, as another holidaymaker reported a similar incident on June 30, 2023 in Peenemünde.
The problems are growing
The affected holidaymaker clearly expresses her concerns: “It must be ensured that the regulations are respected.” On the beaches there are special areas for dogs where it is compulsory to keep them on a leash. However, these rules are often ignored. Children in particular could be at risk from off-leash dogs. The woman is therefore calling for more frequent checks and appeals to all dog owners to keep their animals on short leashes.
In order to improve the situation, meetings recently took place between spa directors, police officers and the responsible public order offices. It turned out that checking at every beach entrance is not practical. Nevertheless, it was emphasized that most holidaymakers and dog owners adhere to the rules, even if conflicts arise again and again, as in the case of the Ückeritz campsite.
A look beyond the borders
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected previous proposals aimed at giving up territory in the Donbass region, while Putin signaled he is considering offers to end the stalemate in the contested zones. International reactions to the talks show that there is broad support for the desire for peace, but it remains to be seen whether and how quickly such an agreement can be reached.
