25 years of art in storage: Anniversary in Stralsund delights visitors!
A very special anniversary was celebrated in Stralsund on November 10, 2025. The Union Memory_people celebrated 25 years since the occupation of the historic brick building on Katharinenberg. Originally built as a steam mill, the warehouse has developed into a creative center over the last two decades that has been “filled” with art. On this special day, people remembered the beginnings and journey of the warehouse, which houses studios, workshops and even a playing card factory.
The celebrations surrounding this successful transformation included, among other things, the opening of a special exhibition entitled “Art Occupied”. This can be seen until the end of the year and shows printed works from the museum workshop of the playing card factory. Many of these works were only discovered after 25 years, which only adds to the fascination of this exhibition.
A window to history
The warehouse is not only a place for creativity, but it also reflects the historical development of the city. Stralsund is one of the cities that has an eventful past with its well-preserved, authentic structures. Loud UNESCO High standards of monument preservation are applied during the renovations in order to preserve the original materials and the appearance of the city. These efforts promote the preservation of the historic city skyline, which is rarely subject to change.
The cities of Stralsund and Wismar were important administrative and trading centers during the Hanseatic era and made a significant contribution to the development of brick building techniques. This is still visible today in the large parish churches and in the impressive town hall of Stralsund. The historic core of the city remains the center of urban life today and is constantly lively.
Creativity and community
The history of the warehouse was also shaped by the community that has kept it alive for more than two decades. The tenants and artists have worked together to create a creative ecosystem that is important not only for those working creatively, but also for the citizens and visitors of Stralsund. The storage facility has therefore taken on an important place in the cultural life of the city.
At a time when many historic buildings are being forgotten or being repurposed, the example of the Speicher is a ray of hope. The connection between art, history and community shows that such initiatives are not only important for the preservation of cultural sites, but also contribute to the revitalization of urban spaces.
Looking into the future, it is to be hoped that further creative projects like that of Speicher_Leute will continue to pave the way to a sustainable and culturally rich city.
