Last Friday, August 15th, the traditionally celebrated harbor festival opened in Ribnitz-Damgarten, with a grand start. Heiko Körner, the deputy mayor, set a happy tone for the event with his opening speech. However, the event began with a courageous bet by the presenters of the Ostseewelle radio station, who challenged the mayor to mobilize not even 100 guests to dance together to the popular song “Macarena”.
What happened next was a true sensation: As the music began, the festival-goers stormed onto the dance floor, and well over 100 people danced along enthusiastically. The deputy mayor mingled with the dancers, which finally made the radio hosts accept defeat.
A celebration for the whole family
The celebrations continued on Saturday. The quayside was well filled with happy visitors enjoying the festival's attractions. From a carousel to a bumper car, there was something for everyone. The sales stands presented maritime goods as well as historical professional coats of arms and invited people to browse.
Among the sellers were Dagmar and Marcus Winkelmann from the Hamburg Craftsman's Association, who were present in Ribnitz for the first time. Marcus reported positive conversations with customers and pleasing sales of over 300 euros. This shows that craftsmanship is also very popular in East Germany.
A highlight with fireworks
Another highlight of the first day of the festival was the impressive fireworks display that shone over the Saal Bodden at 11 p.m. The colorful lights attracted numerous spectators and marked a celebratory conclusion to the first day of the festival, which ended around 1 a.m.
