Lidl relocates Grimmen branch: New market planned on Tribseeser Straße!

Something is happening in Grimmen – Lidl has big plans! The discounter has been planning for some time to relocate its branch from Stralsunder Straße to the newly planned Tribseeser Straße. The old branch is to be replaced by a modern new building, which will not only be beneficial for customers, but will also significantly improve accessibility. The signs point to promising development, but the plans are currently still in the development planning process and the exact construction date is currently unclear. According to Ostsee Zeitung, the city is currently examining all information and concerns, especially with regard to environmental law construction actually begins.

The new location on Tribseeser Straße covers an impressive 2.82 hectares and was originally intended for a residential area. But the plans call for the area to be rezoned as a special area for retail. The draft for the new development plan was approved by city representatives in May 2025 and made available for public inspection until July 2025. Five years ago, Lidl was already talking about sales areas of up to 1,400 square meters, but it now remains to be seen what the size of the new branch will be. The city has already clarified the connection to the state road and coordinated with the responsible road construction authority.

A branch for the future

The decision to change location is no coincidence. Lidl has been based in Grimmen for over 30 years, but sees the new development as an opportunity to offer customers a modern shopping location in more attractive conditions. The new branch concept adapts flexibly to local conditions and impresses with its attractive design with large glass fronts that provide plenty of daylight. This creates a pleasant atmosphere that invites you to stroll and shop. In addition, a spacious, ground-level parking lot will make it easier for customers to get there, as Lidl informs.

In addition, new retail concepts support the relocation of the location. These concepts are well received in times like these, as the current challenges for retail, especially due to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated crises, require a reassessment of city center design. According to the ExWoSt study, many inner-city uses are at risk and it is important to find innovative solutions to avoid vacancies and loss of sales. The goal is clear: “Strengthening city centers and centers” to create lively shopping environments, and this is exactly where Lidl is setting its new focus.

A look into the future

The road is currently rocky: further steps are necessary to realize the plans. Many concerns still need to be addressed, meaning the start of construction could potentially be delayed. In the best case, clean-up work could begin in winter, but the city has a duty to carefully examine all aspects so that a sustainable concept can be adopted for everyone involved. This shows how important comprehensive planning is in times of challenges - after all, the new customer conditions are not only intended to relieve the retail sector, but also contribute to strengthening the entire cityscape of Grimmen.
