Prerow: All eyes on the longest pier in the Baltic Sea!

The pier in Prerow, which at 721 meters is the longest pier in the Baltic Sea, has developed into a real visitor magnet since it opened in October 2024. In the first year, over 500,000 people enjoyed the view of the Baltic Sea from this impressive promenade, which attracts not only locals but also tourists from far away, including Alaska, Denmark, Poland, Sweden, Scotland and the Czech Republic. On weekdays, an average of 1,400 people stroll across the bridge, while on weekends over 2,000 visitors are counted every day, as Nordkurier reports.

The 46 million euro construction took two years and was financed with money from the European Regional Development Fund. The opening was celebrated on October 16, 2024 by Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig. The pier is not only a new tourist attraction, but also an important project for sustainable tourism, as it replaces the former emergency harbor at Darßer Ort and avoids environmental damage, as noted on meckpomm.de.

Attractions and usage

At the end of the pier is the new harbor, which offers 33 berths for water sports boats and acts as a stopover port for longer sea trips. Since it opened, 2,200 boats with a total of over 5,500 guests have visited the harbor. In addition, a modern sea rescue cruiser has its permanent berth here, which ensures additional safety.

The pier enables walks deep into the Baltic Sea, even in unfavorable weather conditions. A viewing terrace at the harbor offers visitors a picturesque view of the wide Baltic Sea coast. Prerow's mayor Christian Seidlitz hopes for a continuous increase in the tourism sector and emphasizes the project's potential for the region.

Looking into the future

The passenger ship pier (FGSA), which was completed last year, is scheduled to be commissioned in 2026. Environment Minister Till Backhaus emphasizes the need for an operating concept and explains that the technical requirements for commissioning are already in place. These expectations are also on the table at DEKRA, which carried out an acceptance test in May. The use of the jetty is regulated in close cooperation between the municipality of Ostseebad Prerow and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The pier in Prerow is an important building block for the region's tourism development. The continued popularity among visitors shows that the place is not only known for its picturesque beaches, but also promotes innovative projects that benefit sustainable tourism.
