Sailing Grand Prix in Sassnitz: A storm of enthusiasm awaits!

A new highlight for the sailing scene in Germany is just around the corner: The Sail Grand Prix is celebrating its German premiere in Sassnitz on the picturesque island of Rügen. Tim Krieglstein, managing director of the German Sail GP team, was recently on the island for the first time and immediately fell in love with the breathtaking scenery. He is convinced: Rügen is not only a fantastic place, but also a top sailing area that meets all the requirements for the Grand Prix. Loud Baltic Sea newspaper The conditions here are quite challenging, with the inconsistent wind and offshore currents of the Baltic Sea. Nevertheless, this does not seem to deter the audience: the demand for grandstand seats for the event on August 16th and 17th is huge, which is why the capacity has already been doubled. Up to 4,000 spectators are expected on each day of the competition.

The races are held on identical 50-foot catamarans that can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h. At a storm talk in Sassnitz, which Krieglstein conducted together with his team, around 150 enthusiastic locals and guests gathered to find out more about the upcoming event. The challenges and the composition of the team

But it's not just the circumstances that need to be considered. Professional sailing is still relatively young in Germany, and the strict regulations for the Sail Grand Prix ensure that each team stays within its budget of a maximum of $10 million per year. Of this, 4.5 million go to the league itself. The German SailGP team around Sebastian Vettel and the two-time Olympic bronze medalist Erik Heil has set itself the goal of achieving a place among the best teams this season - they are currently in eleventh place in the table.

But look ahead: Next weekend, the event in Sassnitz will be a real feast for the eyes, and not just for sailing fans. The boats will be equipped with impressive technology that includes over 125 sensors on each catamaran, which collect over 35,000 data points per second. The excitement will not only be felt on the water surfaces, but also in the spectator stands!

Sassnitz in the spotlight

Organizers thought about more than just the competitions. To ensure a smooth implementation, medical care, transport connections and a variety of culinary offerings are provided. Special buses will also be available to transport visitors to ensure that everyone can enjoy the event. Attention is also being drawn to the parallel folk festival Sail Sassnitz, which could attract a further 20,000 visitors. This means that Sassnitz is presented internationally in this wonderful setting – in front of the famous chalk cliffs.

Tickets for the event are available in different price categories and cost between 500 and 2500 euros. Some tickets have already sold out, which underlines the great enthusiasm and interest of the spectators. And don't forget: ZDF will broadcast live from Sassnitz, guaranteeing that no one at home has to miss out on the thrill of stadium sailing.
