Sassnitz – A look at the historical background

Sassnitz is not only a port city, but also a popular holiday resort on the Jasmund Peninsula with a population of around 9,498 inhabitants (as of 2012). The town offers ideal access to the Jasmund National Park, known for its impressive chalk cliffs. There are also some historical sights here, including the Swedish submarine HMS Otus, which serves as a floating museum, and the Gummanz Chalk Museum, which tells the history of chalk mining.

The area around Sassnitz offers a unique landscape characterized by glacial formations and home to many types of tree species. The 118 meter high Königsstuhl in particular attracts many nature lovers and artists who are inspired by the beauty of nature.

Throughout its history, Sassnitz has gone through many changes, including the incorporation of various communities and the connection to the railway network in 1891. Today the city remains an important destination for tourists who want to take part in events such as the Sail GP or simply explore nature. The town's traditional economy is based primarily on tourism and port operations, while the chalk industry continues to play a role.
