There was a devastating major fire in Samtens on Rügen on August 3rd, which not only set a single-family home on fire, but also a carport containing two vehicles. The damage amounts to around 300,000 euros, reports Baltic Sea newspaper. Fortunately, the two residents, Heike and Stephan, as well as their dog Spike, were able to leave the house unharmed while their belongings went up in flames.

The firefighting forces were quickly on site - a total of 62 firefighters from six surrounding communities fought the flames. The carport burned to its full extent and the flames quickly spread to the roof structure of the single-family home. Martin Settegast, the community's fire chief, described the dramatic circumstances under which the neighbors and emergency services worked. Water was deployed both from the ground and from an aerial ladder to protect adjacent homes.

Neighborhood shows solidarity

In the midst of this difficult situation, the neighbors pulled out all the stops and started a fundraising campaign on Gofundme to help the affected family. “We want to help the family gain a foothold again,” said the initiator of the fundraising campaign. Despite the enormous loss, some personal mementos were saved from the flames.

Mayor Michael Klüß offered his support to those affected, but this was not taken up. Heike and Stephan are now faced with the challenge of rebuilding their lives after this traumatic experience, but with the help of the neighbors, a small hope appears. The community is also strong online and ready to support the affected family during this difficult time.
