Heat and drought: water extraction in Saxony-Anhalt is severely restricted!

Summer in Saxony-Anhalt is currently showing its driest side. It's high time to address the issue of water extraction! In several cities, the use of water for irrigation is already severely restricted. So reported People's voice of a ban on water abstraction, which applies, among other things, in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel. Gardens here are no longer allowed to be watered during the day, while in Jerichower Land a comprehensive watering ban has even been decided on in the towns of Burg, Gommern, Genthin, Biederitz and Parey.

Temperatures are rising above 30 degrees, making the situation even worse. From July 1st, irrigation of gardens and sports fields will also be restricted in Dessau-Roßlau until the end of September. The Mansfeld-Südharz district will pull the ripcord on June 27th and issue strict irrigation regulations: Watering public and private green spaces and sports facilities is prohibited between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Water shortages and their causes

The current situation is not an isolated case. One year after the debate about diesel subsidies for agriculture, farmers and winegrowers are making it clear that they are suffering from a significant lack of rain. These problems are according to the MDR mainly due to climate changes, which cause recurring drought. The responsibility of the wealthier classes for the emission of greenhouse gases must also be mentioned. Luxury yachts and their influence on the climate debate are just one example of ongoing discussions about climate protection.

In this context, a research project by the Federal Environment Agency entitled WADKlim has presented solutions for water management. These include, among other things, better creation of water retention and a focus on efficiency in water treatment. The water shortage in Germany has many causes, ranging from climatic conditions to the high water requirements in metropolitan regions. This shows how important it is to take regional measures to meet the challenges of water scarcity, as the Federal Environment Agency explains in its analysis. Further information can be found on the website Federal Environment Agency.

Responsibility for the future

The ongoing drought and uncertainties regarding future water supplies require a rethink. The creation of legal frameworks and new infrastructures are essential to make water use sustainable. It is also recommended to improve the recording and transparency of irrigation volumes to avoid future usage conflicts. Only through close cooperation between all those involved can the water supply be secured in the long term.

In times like these, it becomes clear that each of us should bear responsibility - be it when watering our own garden or using this valuable resource as sparingly as possible. The message is clear: Summer is not only a time for beautiful days, but also for more conscious action to protect water resources.
