Buchdorf is blossoming: new life through a fresh village festival club!

Things are currently coming to life in Mühlbeck, a small town in Saxony-Anhalt. The local mayor Bernd Hieronymus remembers the early years of the so-called book village, which to this day attracts numerous visitors who enjoy the charming atmosphere and the literary offerings. But demographic change does not stop at Mühlbeck either. More and more younger people want more activities in village life.

In order to fulfill this wish, the new association “Mühlbeck macht’s” was founded. Chairman Kay Hemmerling, a returnee after 25 years, noticed right from the start that there is a great longing for community and culture among the residents. A first village festival, which featured culinary delights and a karaoke night, impressively demonstrated the potential that the village community has. According to [MDR].

Community and culture in focus

A central project was the renovation of the “House of Clubs” on the village square, which now serves as a meeting room for various groups such as the church, the sports club and the fishing community. Hemmerling emphasizes that the book has sentimental value not only for older people. “It is also contemporary and offers opportunities for the future,” he says. Gerhard Gödicke, another member of the association, sees great potential for young ideas, including festivals and readings, to further enrich cultural life in the village.

One thing is clear: in rural regions like Mühlbeck, active village communities offer a high quality of life. Given the current challenges, such as the possible decline in care offerings and the need to promote alternative lifestyles, creative approaches are essential. The BMEL emphasizes that strong civic engagement forms the basis for positive development in rural villages. This applies not only to Mühlbeck, but to many similar places in Germany.

A look into the future

The new club offer is intended to appeal not only to older generations, but also to young families who might want to swap city life for nature and community here. Planning reading series, festivals and musical encounters is a step in the right direction and exactly what many in the village want. This makes Mühlbeck not only a place for book lovers, but also a lively center for community and culture that brings all age groups together.

The book village is full of stories and possibilities. How will the village develop further? One thing is certain: Here, in Mühlbeck, citizen engagement is already very popular and it will be interesting to see which ideas will find their way into village life.
