Thieves strike again: several vans broken into in Anhalt-Bitterfeld!

On the night of Tuesday, September 9, 2025, a group of unknown perpetrators once again set out in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district to break into several vans. The burglars got into the vehicles through the sliding side doors and stole a remarkable amount of power tools. The police also investigated burglaries on Dr.-Krause-Straße and Anhaltische Straße in Köthen as well as on Gartenstraße in Trinum. The total damage is estimated to be in the five-figure range, which unfortunately seems to have become almost normal in such cases. As the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung reports, the police estimated the damage in the neighboring Zörbig and Prosigk region at around 30,000 euros after four vans were also broken into there.

The trend towards thefts from craftsmen's vehicles is not new. There has been an alarming increase in such break-ins in northern Germany in particular in recent weeks. Over 30 break-ins were registered in the Lüneburg district alone. In fact, the problem even extends beyond the borders of the federal state, as the police suspect, as a group of perpetrators is probably active across the region.

Protective measures for craftsmen's vehicles

Given the increasing number of thefts, many craftsmen and entrepreneurs are asking themselves how they can protect their valuable tools. The police give helpful tips to minimize the damage. This includes parking vehicles in well-lit and busy areas and using electronic protection systems in vans. It is also important to darken the loading space to make it difficult to see the valuable tools.

  • Wertgegenstände nicht über Nacht im Fahrzeug lassen
  • Fahrzeuge in geschlossenen Hallen oder Garagen parken
  • Mechanische und elektronische Sicherungen nutzen
  • Gerätenummern notieren und Werkzeuge kennzeichnen
  • Auf verdächtige Personen und Fahrzeuge achten

The high quality of machines and tools that are often taken makes craftsmen's vehicles the preferred target group for thieves. The amount of damage caused by theft in companies is considerable: in 2018 and 2019 this amount amounted to over 2 billion euros. This also includes the theft of motor vehicles, the number of cases of which and the associated damage are high.

The financial aspect of thefts

In 2018, for example, over 570 million euros were caused by the theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles alone. Despite a slight decrease in the number of cases of theft crimes, the financial damage for those affected remains immense. Tradesmen who struggle with theft of their tools can face not only a large financial loss, but often also a loss of business and exposure in the region, which is a disastrous combination for many businesses.

In other words, protecting craftsmen's vehicles and their valuable contents is a top priority. The combination of good safety equipment and a vigilant eye for your surroundings can go a long way in ensuring that their owners' tools find a safe home, especially at a time when thieves are becoming increasingly resourceful.
