Driving under the influence of drugs: Accident in Bitterfeld causes excitement!

A serious accident in Bitterfeld, Saxony-Anhalt, concerns the authorities and once again raises alarm bells about drug abuse on the roads. On Tuesday evening, a 38-year-old driver left the road in his VW Passat and collided with a traffic light pillar. The accident report reached the emergency services at 7:35 p.m. Fortunately, the driver was only slightly injured in this dangerous situation, as [Tag24](https://www.tag24.de/sachsen-anhalt/unfall-sachsen-anhalt/bitterfeld-fahrt-unter-drogeneinfluss-endet-mit-hohem-sach Schaden-3411450) reports.

What is astonishing, however, is that the driver was not only driving a vehicle without a license, but was also under the influence of illegal drugs. The material damage caused amounts to around 8,000 euros. The Bitterfeld local fire department was quickly on site to clear the scene of the accident and remove any spilled operating materials.

Drugs in traffic: a growing problem

Driving while under the influence of drugs is not only reckless, but can also have serious consequences. According to information from Polizei-Beratung, it is already a misdemeanor to drive under the influence of drugs such as cannabis, cocaine or heroin, even if no abnormalities or accidents occur. The penalties can be quite hefty and include a fine of up to 1,500 euros and a driving ban of up to three months.

If the situation becomes heated due to drug-related driving errors or even accidents, an administrative offense becomes a criminal matter. The possible consequences are prison sentences of up to one year or fines. Of particular concern are the costs associated with a possible medical-psychological examination, which can quickly amount to over 2,000 euros.

The statistics don't lie

The drama of this incident is further reinforced by current statistics. As Law and Politics reports, the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) recently published alarming figures. In 2024, over 4,000 criminal offenses and almost 44,000 administrative offenses were recorded due to drug traffic violations. The majority of these violations affect male road users aged 25 to 44.

Drug offenses represent around 2% of recorded crimes, making it clear that this is an ongoing problem on our streets. Younger age groups, especially 21 to 24 year olds, are also not to be ignored and account for 15% of crimes.

In view of possible drug incidents like the one in Bitterfeld, on a rainy evening, we remember that the International Day against Drug Abuse, celebrated on June 26th, was established in 1987 to highlight the dangers of drug use on the roads.

It is a good thing to take responsibility, not only for yourself, but also for the safety of all road users, and to be aware that consuming drugs while driving can have devastating consequences. The tragic incident in Bitterfeld should raise awareness among all of us in order to avoid such dramatic situations in the future.
