New sponsor for the Gröbzig synagogue: District takes responsibility!

A new beginning for the synagogue in Gröbzig: From 2026, the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district will take over the sponsorship of the Gröbzig Synagogue Museum. This was recorded in a contract that was signed between the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld and the city of Southern Anhalt. The Gröbziger Synagogue e.V. museum association was previously responsible for sponsorship, but will now act as a support association, ushering in a new era for the museum.

When signing the contract, State Minister Rainer Robra expressed his thanks to the museum association and emphasized the immense importance of the museum for Jewish history in Saxony-Anhalt. This underlines the importance of keeping cultural heritage alive. District Administrator Andy Grabner also found clear words and explained that taking over the sponsorship does justice to the district's social obligations.

Continuation under new management

Mayor Thomas Schneider is confident that the museum's valuable work will continue under new ownership. The museum is not only of great importance for the preservation of Jewish heritage, but also plays a crucial role in the social and cultural life of the region. “There’s something going on” – that’s how you could describe the challenge that now needs to be overcome.

The takeover is also intended to ensure that the country meets its obligations to the Jewish communities. In the last three years, the museum has received an impressive institutional funding of over EUR 500,000 from the country, which shows the level of commitment to preserving cultural diversity.

Renovation projects and future exhibitions

Another positive aspect is the opening of a new permanent exhibition in November 2024, which was supported by state and federal funds. In this way, the museum is taking a step forward and keeping up with the times. Funds from the INK funding program (investments in nationally important cultural institutions) were also acquired for the renovation work on the roof of the synagogue building, which illustrates the ongoing support from politicians.

A total of EUR 350,000 is available for the renovation of the historic building, with Saxony-Anhalt co-financing federal funds amounting to EUR 117,500. These investments are important not only for preservation, but also for the cultural development of the district.

With the new sponsorship, the district is expanding its cultural portfolio and will network with other cultural institutions, which can create synergy effects. These are all signs of a prosperous future that will strengthen the museum and Jewish culture in Saxony-Anhalt.
