Urgent vaccination campaign in the Börde district: prevent the flu wave!

The third Long Night of Vaccination is in full swing in the Börde district today. This initiative, which was launched by the Federal Association of Supply Pharmacists, aims to make the public aware of the upcoming flu vaccination season and to increase vaccination rates. The numbers are alarming: Only 38% of people over 60 in Germany are vaccinated against influenza, although the STIKO recommends a rate of 75%. This is particularly recommended for chronically ill people, pregnant women and people in professional groups with an increased risk of infection, such as medical staff.

Like that RKI reported, current data on the vaccination status of the population is essential in order to be able to implement the vaccination recommendations. But in Germany there is no uniform system for collecting such data; They are recorded decentrally and regionally and usually only represent partial samples. These circumstances make it difficult to draw an accurate picture of vaccination acceptance and existing vaccination gaps.

Vaccinations without registration

As part of the current vaccination campaign by the Office of Health and Consumer Protection in cooperation with the Office of Fire, Civil Protection and Rescue Services, those interested can take advantage of the flu vaccination without prior registration and free of charge. The upcoming dates have been set: vaccinations will take place on Wednesday, October 8th, 2025, and Tuesday, October 21st, 2025. If you want to take part, all you need is your health insurance card and your vaccination certificate. If you have any questions, you can contact the office on 03904/7240-2529.

The situation is not only worrying in the Börde district. In the previous flu season 2022/2023, the vaccination rate was 40% for those aged 60 and over in Germany, a decrease compared to the 2021/2022 season. For comparison: in Denmark the proportion of vaccinated seniors was an excellent 78%, and in Ireland it was 76%. Many older people in Germany are at increased risk of serious complications from flu, which makes an annual booster vaccination even more important Federal Statistical Office emphasized.

Why the flu vaccination is important

Influenza is a widespread infectious disease that particularly affects older people more severely. A regularly refreshed vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of infection and thus also the risk of serious illnesses. While the vaccination rate among those over 65 is high in many EU countries, there is still a lot of catching up to do in Germany. People aged 60 and over are particularly affected, for whom the STIKO recommends an annual flu vaccination.

The 3rd Long Night of Vaccination now offers the ideal opportunity to get protected and at the same time actively participate in improving vaccination rates in Germany. It remains to be hoped that many will take advantage of the opportunity and thus contribute to the health of the entire community.
