Together for the moors: Dialogue forum started in the Börde district!

On October 9th and 10th, 2025, the first dialogue forum on moor protection took place in the Börde district, an important step for the preservation of these valuable ecosystems. This forum, which has the motto “From Talking to Doing”, brought together representatives from agriculture, authorities, ministries and nature conservation to jointly develop solutions to the challenges in the area of moorland protection. The venue, the Oschersleben district administration, offered the ideal setting for intensive exchange and constructive discussions.

The issue could not be more topical: increasing drought and the loss of surface water are particularly affecting areas such as the Great Break. This peatland region is at direct risk of drying out, which not only endangers the local flora and fauna but also affects water availability in the region. To improve the situation, strategies for better retention of surface water are urgently needed.

Strategies for the future

The dialogue forum was part of a nationwide model project run by the Federal Environment Ministry, which aims to promote cooperation between different interest groups. The central question of the event was how and when those affected and the public can be involved in the decision-making processes. A representative of the ministry has already provided information about funding opportunities for moorland protection, which are intended to create financial incentives for sustainable projects.

A highlight of the event was an excursion to the Große Bruch, where the participants were not only able to discuss the challenges on site, but also discussed initial approaches to solutions. “Together to preserve our moors” – with this, the Börde district is sending a clear signal of the necessary solidarity on this issue.

International perspectives

However, the importance of moors extends beyond Germany's borders. Peatlands play a crucial role in climate protection and biodiversity: they store around twice as much carbon as all the world's forests, provide habitats for many animal and plant species and protect against floods. However, in the past, their destruction was often caused by agricultural use, peat extraction and infrastructure development. An example of the urgency of the measures is the situation in countries such as Uganda and Rwanda, where the destruction of peatlands leads to high greenhouse gas emissions and severely endangers the natural functions of the ecosystem.

Cooperation with organizations such as the Michael Succow Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is therefore of central importance. The aim is to actively involve the local population in the management of the moors and to promote sustainable land use that brings people and nature into harmony.

In summary, the dialogue forum in the Börde district shows that in order to protect our moors it is important to bring different interests together and communicate effectively with each other. This integrative approach is key to a sustainable future in which peatlands can remain as essential elements of our landscapes.
