Thunderstorm warning in Bavaria: there is a risk of squalls and heavy rain!

Summer is showing its changeable side this year: While some people enjoy the sun, the citizens of Bavaria have to prepare for serious changes in the weather. Today, on July 16, 2025, thunderstorm warnings were also issued by the DWD in the Free State. Swabia and Upper Bavaria in particular are currently receiving attention as isolated storms are expected there. This uncertainty brings not only rain, but also squalls and possibly even small-grain hail. A recent report from HNA makes it clear that thunderstorm cells were already active in several regions on the afternoon of July 14th, and the dynamic weather situation does not bode well.

Where does it get uncomfortable? According to the meteorological forecasts, the districts of Augsburg, Neuburg-Schrobenhausen, Freising, Erding, Dachau, Aichach-Friedberg and Fürstenfeldbruck are particularly affected. Heavy rain of up to 40 liters per square meter and hail with a diameter of up to two centimeters can occur anywhere in these regions. The weather situation is actually quite relaxed on Monday morning, but as the day progresses, thunderstorms are approaching again, which will create a thundery atmosphere well into the night - even in the state capital of Munich.

Heavy rainfall and storm warnings

The German Weather Service is expanding the warnings and states that thunderstorms and local storms due to heavy rain are to be expected in some areas. In particular, wind gusts between 60 and 80 km/h are to be expected. In the second half of the day, there is a risk of heavy rain lasting several hours in parts of the eastern edge of the Alps, which can locally cost up to 35 l/sqm in a period of six hours. This refers to the DWD to the risk of storm-like heavy rain with up to 30 l/sqm in a short period of time. This situation could become particularly worrying on Thursday when the thunderstorms are concentrated in the north and east.

The meteorological development shows: Warm sea air is flowing into Germany, which brings with it changeable weather conditions. A heat wave is coming! Temperatures could reach up to 40 degrees, while it remains warm in Bavaria - around 30 degrees. In the coming days, the forecast will also show increasing values, while at the same time the risk of thunderstorms continues. So stay vigilant and keep your eyes and ears open!

Conclusion: perseverance is required

Overall, the forecast for the coming days remains tense and it is recommended to regularly check the current warnings. The weather can swing from one extreme to the next, especially in summer. The change between sunshine and thunderstorms can happen quickly. Whether you're barbecuing outdoors or taking a walk in the park, being well-informed is currently the be-all and end-all.
