Ambulance accident near Barneberg: Four injured and total loss!

In the Börde district, specifically on the B245 near Barneberg, a tragic accident occurred on September 6, 2025, in which an ambulance was involved in a collision. The car was driving with flashing lights and a siren when a car driver ignored the right of way and left the road while turning onto the main road. As a result of this collision, the ambulance spun, tipped onto its side and entered the oncoming lane, where it collided with another car, a Mazda. A total of four people suffered injuries in this incident: three occupants of the ambulance, including a patient and two paramedics, and the driver of the VW.

The injured were immediately taken to hospital. The police report that all three vehicles are badly damaged and even speak of a total economic loss. The total amount of damage is estimated at around 230,000 euros. The B245 had to be closed for several hours between Barneberg and Hamersleben due to rescue work.

Serious accidents involving ambulances

Fortunately, accidents involving ambulances like this are rare. According to a report by Time In Germany, an average of one person dies in a collision with an ambulance every year. In a survey in Hesse, the emergency services were optimistic: the demand for operations was increasing, while serious accidents involving emergency vehicles were rare. In Hesse, for example, the German Red Cross had over 637,000 operations in 2022, 55-70% of which were carried out under special signals.

However, the challenges for drivers are enormous. Heavy traffic, poorly parked vehicles and distracted road users contribute to increasing the risk. The German Red Cross therefore invests in improving the visibility of emergency vehicles and regularly trains drivers in driving safety training in order to best prepare them for the special requirements of operations.

Current developments in emergency services

Interestingly, statistics on the frequency of ambulance accidents are not comprehensively recorded. A report from SKVerlag shows that a total of 13.12 million public emergency service operations were registered in Germany in 2020 and 2021. Although an increase in deployments was documented, the deployment numbers reported pacifistically: only 1.8% of emergency deployments were related to traffic accidents.

This is an all-time low and shows a decline compared to previous surveys. The most common reason for deployment was “other emergencies,” followed by internal emergencies and accidental injuries. With the help of training and technical improvements, the rescue services are trying to further increase the safety of their operations and thus ensure smooth operations on the roads.
