Three pipe bursts in Lengefeld: residents suffer from a water shortage!

In the tranquil village of Lengefeld in the Burgenland district, residents are once again struggling with drinking water problems. Within just six weeks, the drinking water pipe broke three times, which not only caused a lot of dissatisfaction, but also significantly reduced the quality of life of the residents. The service interruptions last up to 16 hours, leaving many households without water. MDR reports that....

A particularly affected area of the L203 has recently been closed to traffic - and again. This closure follows a burst pipe near number 37. Repair work is ongoing but the road is not expected to be opened until June 13th. There was already a similar situation at this point in May, which also led to a complete closure. At that time, residents had expressed concerns that the entire trouble was exacerbated by heavy goods traffic in connection with the construction of a bridge near Kleinheringen. The Mitteldeutsche Zeitung informs about it....

The causes of the repeated pipe bursts appear to be complex. The Saale-Unstrut-Finne water and wastewater association attributes the problems to trucks that deliver material to the construction site of the new Bad Kösen bypass road and drive over the water pipe. However, this is rejected by the state road construction authority, which explains that the trucks do not use the through town at all. How long these tensions between those responsible will last remains to be seen.

A possible way out of the misery would be to replace the entire pipe. However, such a measure could take months. To be implemented, the road would have to be torn up over a length of 240 meters - a measure that would not only be uncomfortable for the residents, but would also further burden traffic in the region.

What can be done about water losses? There are innovative approaches here. In recent years there has been increased investment in technologies for monitoring and early detection of burst pipes. Before the 90s, the pipe network was neglected in many regions and led to massive water losses, which have fortunately been reduced to around 16% today. Zwav reports that….

By using modern noise data loggers, leaks are now identified more quickly and pressure on maintenance is increased. The system is designed to continuously monitor the condition of the pipe networks and detect damage at an early stage without having to close roads. These digital helpers could also contribute to stabilizing the water supply in Lengefeld.

The mayor of the city of Naumburg, whose home is in the immediate vicinity of the affected areas, now also has to take detours. The current situation in Lengefeld is unsatisfactory for everyone involved and poses major challenges for those responsible. Hope for improvement lies in the innovative approaches to water supply that could gradually revolutionize the region.
