Volunteer reading sponsors in the Burgenland district: New folders for more reading pleasure!

Something is happening in the area of reading promotion in Burgenlandkreis! Over 170 volunteer reading sponsors are already involved, and at a recent network meeting in Saubach, 25 of them received new, well-thought-out reading sponsor folders. These folders are not just a stylish accessory, but rather a valuable support that provides tips and suggestions for working as a reading mentor. Christian Rößler, volunteer coordinator for the Burgenland district, emphasizes the importance of these folders for both new and experienced reading sponsors, as they not only serve as transportable work material, but also represent a sign of appreciation. Each folder has a stamp “Lesepaten Burgenlandkreis”, which documents its use in reading and learning books.

Particular attention is paid to the folders made specifically for reading mentors in daycare centers. But don't worry, all reading sponsors in the Burgenland district have the opportunity to apply for a folder - even if they missed the network meeting. Anyone who is interested can contact the education office directly on 03445/732165 or via email at bildungsbuero@blk.de.

Commitment and networking

Reading sponsors do much more than just open a book once a week. They are active in around 25 primary and special schools as well as ten daycare centers in order to awaken the joy of reading in children and to sustainably strengthen the promotion of reading. The committed volunteers read to children in daycare centers and support reading and learning in schools. The network, which was launched in 2023 and is coordinated by the Education Office, enables the existing reading sponsor groups in Naumburg, Hohenmölsen and Droyßig to exchange their experiences.

And that's not all! The next big network meeting is scheduled for April 10, 2024, to which active reading and learning sponsors as well as representatives from administration, libraries, primary schools and interested people are invited. The aim of this meeting is to provide an overview of the volunteer work of reading sponsors and to promote networking. Registration is possible until April 1, 2024. If you want to secure your participation, you should hurry up!

Support from the federal government

The initiative to promote reading is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education, Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, as well as by regional partners such as libraries and the Konrad Martin House in Bad Kösen. Projects such as “NeOBi” and “Bildungskommunen” also play an important role in promoting reading mentors in the Burgenland district.

In conclusion, it can be said that the volunteer reading sponsors play a key role in supporting children in their reading skills. Regular reading lessons are organized to suit the kids according to their developmental stages. There are now even ideas where older children and young people could get involved as “book buddies” to read to the younger ones. The variety of approaches to promoting reading brings a breath of fresh air into the educational landscape - and that's a good thing!
