Insects in summer: tips for the safe handling of bumblebees and wasps

In the sunny season, bumblebees, wild bees, hornets and wasps take their place in our gardens and settlements. This brings one or the other challenge with it, especially in Naumburg and Nebra, where the dry weather favors additional insect activity. According to the information from mz.de are many of the species mentioned as beneficiaries classify and do not have the bad reputation that they often accompany.

A hornet or a wasp only stands out if it feels threatened - mostly these reserved insects are simply looking for food or a safe place to nest. A wasp sting may be painful, but usually remains harmless if there is no allergy. However, it should be noted that both bees and wasps can trigger allergies, but hornets rarely. Their importance in the ecosystem should not be underestimated: bumblebees and wild bees not only dust our edible plants, but also contribute to biodiversity.

special protection regulations

These insects are particularly protected in accordance with the Federal Agency Protection Ordinance. This means that it is forbidden to violate or kill wild animals of these protected species. This regulation applies to both the free landscape and closed settlement areas. Exceptions may only be made in special cases - for example in the case of a nest of not particularly protected wasp species, where knowledgeable people or specialist companies can work in order to relocate. However, killing the animals should always be the last remedy.

Special protected species such as hornets, wild bees and bumblebees need approval from the lower nature conservation authority to relocate. In autumn all nest residents die, except the queen, who is looking for a safe place to hibernate. It is to be hoped that even in urban areas, the benefits will continue to receive a chance to find their place in the garden and nature and thus contribute to a healthy ecosystem.

public awareness and help

Not only in Naumburg, but also in other cities such as Berlin, the investigation of the citizens about the behavior and importance of insects is emphasized. Fears that are often unfounded must not be a hindrance. The Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment provides various information sheets. In particular, the information sheet "When bees, bumblebees, hornets or wasps interfere" is helpful for many to clarify misunderstandings and reduce uncertainties. More information can be found on the website of Senate Administration .

In addition, the NABU in Berlin offers a hymenopter service that can be helpful in the relocation of hornets, especially if they cause nesting or damage near children. It is an important step to reconcile humans and animals.

The variety of insects

insects are the most species -rich group of animals in the earth with almost a million scientifically described species worldwide. Over 33,000 types of insects live in Germany, which makes up about three quarters of all animal species in the country. These small beings are true all -rounders: they sow our plants, spread seeds and are at the top of the food chain of many animals. However, the challenges of habitat loss, the use of pesticides and climate change are considerably increasing this diversity. Therefore there are already numerous species that are threatened by extinction.

The Nabu | Naturgucker Academy has exciting courses on offer that are dedicated to diversity and knowledge of insects. This commitment is intended to help promote the appreciation of these little beneficials. Here are some of the courses offered:

course name duration available from
Insect basic knowledge 24 learning lessons 01/2026
wild bees building knowledge 12 learning lessons 02/2026
bumblebees compact 6 learning lessons 05/2026

In any case, awareness of the importance of insects is of the greatest importance for our environment. Further information on the courses can be found on the website of the NABU Akademie .
