Freedom for Somalis: verdict after arson in Coswig!

A fire in a refugee accommodation in Coswig, Wittenberg district, has led to a sensational trial. The 24-year-old Somali, who was on trial as a defendant in this case, was acquitted by the Dessau-Roßlau regional court. However, the judges ordered that he be placed in a rehabilitation center. How MDR reported, the defendant must bear the costs of the proceedings.

The fire occurred in a moment of desperation for the defendant, who was suffering from a “pathological mental disorder.” This was caused by excessive alcohol consumption and cannabis use. The court found that the defendant was not interested in killing other people - on the contrary: his goal was to take his own life, accepting the danger to the other 16 residents in the accommodation. Fortunately, everyone was able to get to safety in time; the property damage amounted to around 20,000 euros.

An unexpected verdict

Another case from the region shows that arson in refugee accommodation is a serious problem.
