New cycle path in Dessau: Safe traffic for cyclists now a reality!

A new cycle path has been inaugurated in Dessau-Roßlau, which is intended to significantly improve mobility in the city. The official opening of the 750 meter long cycle path on Albrechtstrasse, which runs between Körnerstrasse and Walderseestrasse, took place on Tuesday morning. Mayor Robert Reck and State Secretary Sven Haller had the honorable task of cutting the ribbon, even if the guests had to wait a little longer because the necessary equipment had to be brought in from Roßlau. The waiting cycling enthusiasts used the time to refresh themselves with a glass of sparkling wine or orange juice, which lightened the atmosphere and increased anticipation. MZ reports.

Albrechtstrasse is a busy north-south route, and increasing safety for both pedestrians and cyclists was a central goal of this construction project. As part of the comprehensive work, which spanned two years, various measures to improve the surrounding area were initiated. This includes planting trees, setting up benches and replacing lighting. In addition, new drinking water pipes as well as power and data cables were laid. Despite the extensive construction activities, which are scheduled to last until the end of 2023, accessibility to the important transport axis remains a challenge, as recorded in the current construction site calendar. Context on the cycling situation in Germany

This new opening comes at a time when the topic of cycling is becoming increasingly important in Germany. A Europe-wide study on road safety, the Urban Road Safety Index 2024, has shown that although German cities are considered relatively safe, there is still a lot to do when it comes to expanding and securing cycle paths. In cities like Berlin and Cologne, less than half of cyclists feel safe. Positively completed projects, such as in Munich, where 62 percent of cyclists experience a safe infrastructure, show what is possible when investments are made in cycling infrastructure. In large cities, around 60 percent of those surveyed are in favor of 30 km/h zones in city centers, which increases the pressure on municipalities to take action on the issue of road safety. ADFC highlights.

The new route in Dessau-Roßlau is not only an important addition to the existing infrastructure, but also a sign that the city is actively working to improve cycling safety. With such measures, cycling in the city can be made more attractive and safer, which ultimately leads to more people discovering environmentally friendly mobility for themselves. The future of cycling seems promising in Dessau-Roßlau, and the first steps have now been taken!
