Discover Stendal's giant Trojan horse: an adventure for kids!
What is actually behind the impressive Trojan horse in Stendal? In the largest city in the Altmark, which not only impresses with its historic brick Gothic buildings from the 15th century, the special sculpture is located very close to the Winckelmann Museum. This is about more than just art; the wooden masterpiece is the largest walk-on Trojan horse in the world. With a height of 15 meters, a length of 13 meters and a width of 5 meters, children in particular can explore the inside of the horse and enjoy a fantastic view of the city from above. This is what [MDR] reports (https://www.mdr.de/kultur/ausflug-tipps/sommerferien-sachsen-anhalt-kinder-familien-ausflugsziel-106.html).
The city of Stendal offers more than just the famous horse. The beautiful ramparts and the Uchte river bring a lot of green into the cityscape. A short, less than ten-minute walk from the main train station leads directly to the charming old town, which has many historical highlights, such as the impressive St. Nicholas Cathedral.
An experience for the whole family
The Stendal Zoo is another highlight for families and especially for young visitors. Around 460 animals of 75 species live here, including some endangered species. The walk-in aviary allows you to experience exotic birds up close, and the petting enclosure ensures lots of fun for the little ones. The zoo offers a perfect opportunity to organize a family outing.
There is also an exciting simulation game taking place on the Peißnitz Island in Halle. From June 13 to July 19, 2025, children and young people aged 7 to 14 have the opportunity to design and manage their own city. They can try out careers, start their own projects and learn how communication and administration work in a city. It is an impressive opportunity to promote children's creativity and allow them to actively participate in their environment.
Historical discoveries and practical travel
Stendal's old town is not only home to the largest Trojan horse, but also many historical buildings, such as the Altmärkisches Museum, which is housed in a former monastery. Next to it is the stone Roland on the market square, which stands as a symbol of the city's rights. The town hall on the market with its oldest secular carved wall in Germany from 1462 deserves special attention. The St. Mary's Church, which is impressive with a height of 82 meters, also scores points with its historical value.
