On November 8, 2025, a tragic accident occurred in Halle (Saale) in which a 12-year-old boy was hit by a car and seriously injured. According to a report by MDR The incident happened on the Südstadtring, in the immediate vicinity of a bus stop and the tram stop at the Südstadt S-Bahn station. The driver ran over a stopped school bus that was flashing its hazard lights to draw attention to the school children.
The boy was trying to cross the road from the bus stop to the tram stop when the serious collision occurred. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he is now receiving medical treatment. The Halle police have started investigating this case.
Accident statistics for children in traffic
Such accidents are alarming and are unfortunately increasing statistically. A recent study shows that around 27,260 children under 15 were injured in traffic accidents in 2024, which remains almost the same compared to the previous year. At the same time, the number of children killed in traffic accidents rose from 44 to 53. On average, one child had an accident in traffic every 19 minutes last year. The journey to school in particular poses an increased risk for children between the ages of 6 and 14.
Most affected children were traveling in cars (35%), followed by cyclists (33%) and pedestrians (21%). Children up to the age of six who often sit in an adult's car are particularly at risk. The period from Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. is considered to be particularly risky for traffic accidents involving children.
Prevention is required
Against this background, preventive measures are essential. It is important that both drivers and parents are made aware in order to increase children's safety on the roads. Raising awareness is the first step to preventing future tragedies. In this regard, actions and education in schools and communities could have a positive effect.
In any case, we can only hope that the 12-year-old boy can recover soon. Recent events remind us of the responsibility we all have to ensure the safety of the youngest road users.
