Bad Harzburg's treetops: 200,000 visitors in 10 years!
There is a lot going on in the world of leisure tourism in the picturesque Harz, and especially in Bad Harzburg. How news38 reports, the focus is on, among other things, the popular treetop path and the associated tree-top cable car. These attractions have become particularly attractive thanks to the operators Eva Ronkainen-Kolb and Holger Kolb. Opened ten years ago, the treetop path has proven to be a real magnet and now enjoys annual visitor numbers of around 200,000, which greatly exceeds the original plan of 80,000.
The tree suspension railway ideally complements the experience and has attracted around 350,000 guests since it opened. In addition to a large number of visitors who can purchase a combination ticket for both attractions, the number of employees has also increased from a minimum of 7 to an impressive 80 during the high season. But it's not just the existing offers; the Kolbs have big plans and work like that baumwipfelpfad-harz.de reveals, is already working on a new attraction: the Wipfel adventure world, which is scheduled to open in 2027 and is planning an investment volume of 12 million euros. In addition, the city of Bad Harzburg is contributing a further 6 million euros.
Prudent plans and environmental concerns
Despite the positive developments, Harz environmentalists express concerns about the rapidly increasing number of visitors and their impact on the environment. The discussion about leisure tourism in the Harz often revolves around the question: “How much is too much?” Kolb emphasizes that the new attractions are intended to keep visitor numbers in the region, not increase them. The aim is to attract holidaymakers not only to Bad Harzburg, but to the entire region. Investments in other places such as Torfhaus and Hahnenklee are also being considered.
Although the number of tourists is growing, restaurateurs and parking lot operators in particular are facing challenges. It is important to manage capacities clearly so as not to overload the locations. Lighthouse projects are intended to help avoid overcrowding in popular areas and at the same time put income into nature conservation, as part of the income goes to the state forests.
Harz as a popular travel destination
The entire Harz region, which includes the districts of Goslar and Altkreis Osterode and offers numerous sights, is definitely a worthwhile holiday destination. How Lower Saxony tourism network notes, almost 1.2 million guests came to the Harz in 2024, which together generated over 3.7 million overnight stays. It is noteworthy that the overnight stay level has reached 94% of the 2019 value.
What is particularly exciting is that Denmark, as the most important source market, ranks at the top for foreign guests with almost 120,000 overnight stays. With a successful concept and varied attractions, the Harz has managed to establish itself as one of the most important travel regions in Lower Saxony.
For anyone who wants to discover and enjoy the beauty of the Harz Mountains, the combination of the treetop path, the tree-top cable car and other attractions in the region offers a perfect opportunity to experience nature up close.
