Be careful, scammers! Fake police officers target children in Jerichower Land

There are worrying developments in the area of fraud in the Jerichower Land district. It is currently evident that con artists do not even stop at young people. Last Saturday evening, more precisely around 9:50 p.m., a 15-year-old teenager was approached by supposed police officers on Grabower Landstrasse in Burg near Magdeburg. They obviously intended to subject them to a fictitious traffic stop. But the young lady was smarter, noticed the strange behavior of the two men and realized that the ID card they had shown was a fake. Thanks to her intuition, she avoided possible fraud and the family immediately called the police. Fortunately, there was no financial loss in this case, but police are warning about increasingly active fraudsters, which have been particularly common in the last month. This reports Day24.

However, many older people in the district were less lucky, as they fell victim to similarly bold scams over the same period of time. Between June 4th and 18th, duos were increasingly spotted ringing the doorbells of older citizens. One perpetrator introduced himself as a harmless inquirer about hotels, while the second in the background took the opportunity to break into the apartment undetected and steal valuable items. Such practices are not new, but the creativity and audacity of fraudsters seem to be growing.

The tricks of the fraudsters

The methods fraudsters use to try to get money and valuables are varied and increasingly perfidious. They often show fake ID cards to gain access to their victims' homes, as well hdi.de describes. Older people are often the main targets for these crimes, and fraudsters take advantage of the trust they place in the police. On the phone they pretend to be police officers, BKA officials or other officials. Some perpetrators even send fake arrest warrants demanding payments to supposedly avoid incarceration.

The manipulation can be perfidious: victims receive calls in which the fraudsters tell dramatic stories - for example about impending break-ins. The victims are put under such pressure that they are willing to hand over cash and jewelry to a “police colleague” who supposedly wants to take them “into custody.” In some cases, there have even been reports that they were able to grab contents from bank lockers.

Police are appealing to the public to remain vigilant and exercise particular caution. It is important to always lock doors and not be afraid to contact neighbors or the real authorities if in doubt. Older citizens in particular should be informed and made aware of these fraud methods so as not to fall into the trap.

In a world where such scammers appear increasingly professional, it is crucial to be vigilant and not be fooled by first impressions. Prevention starts with each individual and requires keeping a close eye on the news and your surroundings.
