Daycare crisis in Saxony-Anhalt: Parents fight for children's food rights!

In Saxony-Anhalt the number of children is declining, while the challenges for daycare centers are becoming ever greater. Parents and educators find themselves in a difficult situation in view of the daycare crisis, which is becoming increasingly noticeable in the region. In this context, it is particularly important to promote dialogue between parents and children, especially when it comes to the topic of food. So reported People's voice that children often come home from daycare hungry and often fussy. The taste preferences of the little eaters should ideally correspond to the daycare meals so that they feel comfortable in their familiar surroundings.

“Pasta with sausage and eggs with mustard sauce have to taste the same,” is how an author with two sons describes how the usual household food influences the children’s expectations. The father's experiment of seasoning the mustard sauce was not well received: "The children prefer a weaker version that is reminiscent of daycare." This uncertainty among parents and educators is also a sign of the general unrest in the daycare landscape, where the upcoming closures and layoffs are becoming increasingly threatening.

The daycare crisis in detail

There is an urgent need for change in many daycare centers, with increasing demands on skilled workers. In East Germany, educators have to look after a larger number of children than in the West World reported. This means that thousands of educators may be laid off, while at the same time the number of children in the East is falling noticeably.

Another reason for concern is the inadequate care ratio, which is below the recommended values in the eastern German federal states. Pairs of professionals and children are often unfairly distributed, which means that the quality of care suffers. Thuringia, for example, has the worst ratio in Germany, with only one teacher for 18 children. However, this is expected to improve from January 2024: the care ratio will be increased to 1:12 for children over three years old and 1:6 for two to three year old children. A step in the right direction, but the teachers are already feeling the high level of stress, which often leads to absences due to illness.

Perspectives for the future

Comprehensive measures are required to guarantee the quality of care in daycare centers. Pro-Kita underlines the urgency of recruiting qualified personnel and creating attractive working conditions. At the same time, further training and support for career changers are essential in order to counteract the current shortage of skilled workers, which affects over 125,000 skilled workers.

Finally, it remains to be hoped that the situation in the daycare centers will soon improve through joint efforts by politicians, educational institutions and parents. The anticipation of summer holidays and a variety of activities for families can also provide a welcome distraction while waiting for the conditions in the daycare centers to finally stabilize.
