Reading Summer XXL: Record participation inspires children in Saxony-Anhalt!
A record-breaking reading adventure came to fruition in Saxony-Anhalt this year: The 16th Reading Summer XXL ended with a fantastic participation of 7,884 little readers. This is an impressive increase of 1,233 participants compared to the previous year, which underlines the great enthusiasm for the program. The majority of participants were primary school students, who not only broadened their reading horizons, but also took advantage of the wonderful offerings of the 58 active libraries in Saxony-Anhalt. The President of the State Administration Office of Saxony-Anhalt, Thomas Pleye, described the Reading Summer XXL as an important educational initiative to promote reading skills.
The libraries worked hard to motivate young readers. Reading nights, quizzes and individual consultations were offered. These measures proved to be real reading magnets and ensured that the children happily immersed themselves in the world of books. The most popular works included “Greg’s Diary”, “The School of Magical Animals” and “The Three ???”. Non-fiction books, such as the “What is What” series, were also very well received by the participants.
Reading summer 2025: A balanced offer
The next Reading Summer The last date for submitting the evaluation cards is August 16, 2025, and a closing event is planned for September 20th at which the little readers will be properly celebrated.
But that's not all! The city libraries have worked hard to offer a wide range of children's and young adult books. These initiatives are not just intended for a short period of time: the organizers are committed to sustainable reading promotion, which is also present in educational institutions in the long term.
The role of libraries in promoting reading
Reading is an important cultural technique – a foundation of every educational process. Libraries play a central role here. They not only offer a variety of printed and digital media to promote reading, but also actively support the process of learning to read and language development. Cooperations with daycare centers and schools are of great importance in order to awaken enthusiasm for reading at a young age.
A variety of offers, from picture book cinema to reading sponsorships, revolve around the topic of the joy of reading. For example, special programs for weak readers and gender-specific formats are in high demand. Registering for the many activities is a real experience for all children and an excellent opportunity to get together with their peers.
This means that the reading summer is not just a short-term event, but also the start of many other exciting reading promotion projects that will follow in the coming months and years.
