Things will soon get busy in Magdeburg - on November 15, 2025 to be precise Tumor Center Magdeburg/Saxony-Anhalt e.V. invites you to the 25th information day “Active against Cancer” in the Johanniskirche. From 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., all visitors, relatives and those affected are warmly invited to find out about current developments in cancer research and treatment.
The program is promising: In addition to exciting lectures, participants can expect discussion groups and numerous information stands. A highlight of the information day will be an oversized breast model that clearly shows the changes that can be observed in the context of early cancer detection. The opening will be taken over by Prof. Dr. Dimitrios Mougiakakos, who also heads the Clinic for Hematology and Oncology at the Otto von Guericke University. Minister Petra Grimm-Benne will give a welcoming speech.
Important topics in focus
The information day covers a wide range of topics that include both health care and new diagnostic and therapeutic options. Among other things, current developments in the treatment of breast cancer, prostate cancer and other types of tumors are discussed in forums. Professor Mougiakakos has carried out significant research into the development of immunotherapies, which are now among the most successful therapies. Their effectiveness is particularly evident in the treatment of widespread diseases such as leukemia.
The focus is not only on research, but also on the practical aspects of therapy. In the field of gynecology, for example, it is about the effects of cancer on sexuality and memory, while urology examines new focal therapeutic approaches for prostate cancer. In gastroenterology, the focus is on innovative surgical methods for colon and rectal tumors. Modern surgical techniques for brain and spinal tumors will also be presented by experts.
Research at a high level
The Otto von Guericke University recently received five million euros for research into cancer treatments. These funds come from state and European funding and are aimed at further developing analogous modular cell and immunotherapies. This not only benefits science, but also patients who are looking for alternative therapeutic options. Fighters like Christoph Bensch, who is healthy again after a bone marrow transplant and takes part in shot put competitions, clearly show that advances in cancer research can be life-changing.
The research also includes targeting specific proteins on tumor cells to activate immune cells more effectively against cancer cells. When immune cells, such as macrophages, are manipulated, their ability to specifically attack and destroy tumor cells is increased.
The information day is an excellent opportunity to find out about these and many other topics. A free entrance without prior registration makes the visit accessible to everyone. There is also a press contact for the event: Dr. Julia Noack is available at tumorzentrum@med.ovgu.de and by telephone at 0391 67 15955.
The information day offers numerous opportunities and valuable information for all those who would like to deal comprehensively with the topic of cancer. Don't miss the chance to be there!
