Magdeburg's energy transition: New substation secures the future!

A lot is currently happening in Magdeburg. The establishment of Intel in the region casts its shadow and brings with it several exciting developments. But what exactly is happening at Eulenberg? The new substation of the electricity network operator 50Hertz, which is currently under construction, will play a small but important role in this big puzzle.

The substation is currently in full swing, and its initial capacity will be significantly lower than originally planned. Instead of the originally planned output of 1,600 megawatts, it will initially only go into operation with 400 megawatts, as MDR reports. This is done as part of an investment of a whopping 70 million euros. Commissioning is planned for the beginning of 2027, which certainly opens up opportunities to meet the needs of the targeted industrial settlements.

Stable energy supply and wind power

The substation will be built in the east of Eulenberg, directly west of the A14 Magdeburg-Sudenburg junction, and will be able to accommodate electricity from up to 114 wind turbines. Theoretically, this could supply a million households. A real step forward for the local energy supply, which is in the midst of a transition towards more renewable energies. According to the Federal Environment Agency, 54.4% of gross electricity consumption will be covered by renewable energies in 2024, with wind energy accounting for the largest share. There is a clear trend here and the substation could play a decisive role in the integration of new projects in the field of renewable energies and the associated industrial settlements.

Saxony-Anhalt's Finance Minister Michael Richter (CDU) expressed optimism about the planned sale of the area to the state. Intel has already signaled that they are ready to sell to the public sector, although a concrete demand has not yet been made. This leaves the question of whether Intel would be satisfied with a cost-covering sale, especially since the company is currently under pressure for financial reasons.

A hub for renewable energy

In addition, this substation will not only meet Intel's needs, but will also benefit surrounding network areas. It is being realized jointly by 50Hertz, Avacon and the Städtische Werken Magdeburg and shows once again how important a stable energy supply is in times of change. According to the current figures from the Umweltbundesamt, 41% of gross final energy consumption in Germany will be covered by renewable energies by 2030 - and Magdeburg plays a key role here.

The substation's 28 hectare area could be important not only for Intel, but also for other industrial settlements in the future. The region is therefore becoming more relevant in the area of renewable energies, which wonderfully combines entrepreneurial thinking and climate policy goals.

The demolition of the remaining settlements on the B81 is still pending, but the big picture is already apparent: Magdeburg could soon become a showcase project for the energy transition if everything goes according to plan. It will be exciting to see how the situation develops!
