Once a month there is a particularly lively and welcoming language café in the Magdeburg city library. Launched two years ago by the committed librarian Anne Rüster, this meeting point has quickly developed into a meeting place. People from different countries come together here to learn German and get to know each other. The number of participants varies between 20 and 60 people per event, which impressively reflects the diversity and lively interest in integration into the German language. The city library itself has an impressive history, which began on November 6, 1525 with the takeover of the monastery library of the Augustinian monastery. After several moves and modernizations, the library now has an area of 3,400 square meters and offers over 350,000 items that are borrowed more than a million times annually. Anne Rüster, who previously worked in Berlin libraries, has taken on responsibility for international literature in Magdeburg and is thus promoting intercultural exchange.
A place of meeting
The language café is open to all language levels and is accompanied by a German language mentor, such as 22-year-old trainee Jakob Reuter, who greatly values intercultural exchange. “Each table has its own language mentor who is responsible for the German language,” says Rüster. This concept not only promotes language learning, but also creates social contacts and friendships among the participants. The regular meetings reflect a great need for exchange and integration.
The city library is also known for its numerous other events. It offers around 1,500 events every year, including readings, workshops and game afternoons. The library itself is described as a “third place” that not only serves as a learning space, but also as a leisure and meeting place. Events that contribute to the visibility of society's diversity are firmly anchored in the program. Intercultural activities are open to everyone and emphasize the easy integration and meeting of people from different backgrounds.
Diverse offers for everyone
The aim of promoting an intercultural community runs like a common thread through the offerings. Multilingual readings and game afternoons also take place as part of the intercultural events. These opportunities not only help with language acquisition, but also help break down prejudices and make new friends. The Language café of the Saxony-Anhalt foreign company. v. also has the motto “Time for you and your languages!”, which aims to improve the language skills of the participants and make new contacts. Other languages such as Polish, French, Spanish and English are also offered here.
