From graffiti to culture: Buckauer Bahnhof becomes a puppet theater center!

A lot is happening in Magdeburg: The train station building in Buckau will soon be converted into a cultural hotspot. The plan is to transform the building into a unique center for puppet theater, which will be initiated by the “Quartier P” project. The Magdeburg Puppet Theater, which is already known for its quality and has been awarded the Federal Theater Prize, plays a central role in this. It is said that the idea came about during the bid for the title of European Capital of Culture and could soon become a reality.

The vision not only includes the renovation of the dilapidated station building, which is currently struggling with graffiti and broken glass, but also the expansion of the puppet theater. Investor Marc Weiler sees great potential in the Buckau district, which used to be a center for heavy engineering and now houses cultural highlights such as a technology museum and a literature house. Architect Peter Schube emphasizes the monument protection and aesthetic value of the station, which will act as a “nucleus” for this creative project.

Puppet theater for everyone

At the heart of the project is a course of study that is unique in Europe and is intended to take training in puppet theater to a new level. Two master's degree programs are planned: “Directing for Puppet Theater” and “Puppet Making”. These are offered in cooperation with the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin and the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts. The goal is clear: to increase awareness of puppet theater and promote new innovations to expand cultural offerings for different target groups. meter reports on the importance of making puppet theater accessible to laypeople, cultural tourists and professionals.

In addition, the Magdeburg Puppet Theater is planning to expand its offering internationally through new collaborations and could further gain recognition with its innovative events, such as the “BLICKWECHSEL” festival.

The next steps

There is already initial progress towards these ambitious plans. Around 800,000 euros in funding will be made available for the urgently needed renovation of the station building, and the final work is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2027. Those responsible are currently waiting for the project to move on to the next steps of political consultation. MDR points out that the renovation and expansion of the historic building will not only result in an upgrading of the Buckau district, but will also sustainably enrich the cultural landscape of Magdeburg.
