Student numbers in Saxony-Anhalt at a record high: A look at the trends!
The school statistics in Saxony-Anhalt are impressive! An impressive 211,899 students are enrolled in the state in the current 2024/25 school year. This number increased by 36,580 students or 20.9 percent compared to the 2010/11 school year. Magdeburg News reported that primary schools in particular are benefiting from this increase, where the number of students increased by 13,154 to a total of 78,798. At primary schools, the proportion of the total student body is 37.2 percent.
But not everything is going rosy: While the primary schools are celebrating, the secondary schools are having to accept negative developments. Here the number of students fell by 2,933 to 41,421, which corresponds to a decline of 6.6 percent. The proportion of secondary school students in the total student body has now fallen to 19.5 percent, compared to 25.3 percent in 2010/11.
Growth in community schools and high schools
However, there is a ray of hope in the community schools, whose student numbers have increased to 17,604. These schools were created primarily through the conversion of secondary schools since 2013/14. Their share of the total student population is now 8.3 percent.
The high schools also recorded an increase: Here the number of students rose by 5,836, which corresponds to an increase of 12.7 percent. This means that high school students now make up 24.4 percent of the total student body, a slight decline since 2010/11, when it was 26.2 percent.
Special developments in the school structure
The integrated comprehensive schools are enjoying increasing popularity, with an increase of 3,380 students (116.7 percent) to a total of 6,276. The Free Waldorf Schools also recorded significant growth with 1,419 students, 734 more than before (107.2 percent). Here the proportion of the total student body is 0.7 percent.
However, this contrasts with second-chance schools, which suffered a decline of 471 students to 309. Their share of the total student body drops to 0.1 percent. The situation is similar at cooperative comprehensive schools and special schools, where the numbers are also declining.
Regional differences clearly noticeable
A look at the regional differences shows that the number of students in Magdeburg increased by a remarkable 42.3 percent, followed by Halle (Saale) with 37.8 percent and the Saale district, which recorded an increase of 32.0 percent. In contrast, there is a rather stagnating development in the Stendal district with 3.4 percent, the Harz district with 4.3 percent and the Mansfeld Südharz district with 5.3 percent. Hall indicator has comprehensively examined the situation.
Overall, the school statistics for Saxony-Anhalt show a colorful picture: Despite the challenges in some areas, the high number of students is a sign of growth in the state's education system. In the coming years, it will be crucial to respond to the needs of students and adapt school structures accordingly.
