New train station in Bitterfeld-Wolfen: Future meets sustainability!
On July 16, 2025, a new train station was put into operation in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, which represents a milestone not only architecturally but also environmentally. After a two-year construction period, the starting signal was given for the modern, sustainable reception building, which was built on the ruins of a train station that was over 160 years old. daily news reports on the opening, at which the Saxony-Anhalt Transport Minister Lydia Hüskens and the Mayor Armin Schenk were present.
With a facade made of recycled aluminum and large glass surfaces, the new building stands out clearly from its predecessor. In addition, a green roof with a photovoltaic system was installed, which is not only visually appealing but also contributes to electricity generation. The modern interior offers barrier-free access and numerous facilities that make traveling pleasant. There is, among other things, a travel center, a bakery with a café and space for a newsstand that has everything travelers need. Bahnhof.de points out that the project also includes rooms for the federal police, the station mission and transport companies.
Model project for structural change
The new station building is not only an architectural gain for the city, but is also seen as a model project for structural change in former coal regions. It is intended to serve as a model for future construction projects in the region and shows that sustainability and modern infrastructure can go hand in hand. Climate friendliness is supported by various measures, including free WiFi, public and barrier-free toilets, as well as ATMs and ticket machines.
Particularly noteworthy is the saving of 95% of CO₂ emissions thanks to sustainable construction and the climate-efficient heat supply through district heating. The roof is also covered with native plants, which create a habitat for insects and thus contribute to biodiversity.
Extensive modernization of the environment
Although the station building was completed in June 2025, the modernization work around the station has not yet been completed. Further renovation work on the platforms, their roofs and the passenger underpass are planned by 2028. In addition, a new central bus station will be created, which will have more parking spaces for cars and bicycles.
Overall, the new train station in Bitterfeld-Wolfen shows that a good knack has been demonstrated here to create one of the most sustainable train stations in Germany, which at the same time meets the needs of the population and sets future-oriented accents.
