Osterburg starts a cheap electricity market: EnwiO brings renewables into households!
The city of Osterburg, in the heart of the Altmark, has taken a remarkable step towards a sustainable energy future. The newly opened regional electricity market called “EnwiO” – Energy like Osterburg – promises residents of the 39606 zip code not only green energy, but also attractive prices. This is a real win for anyone interested in renewable energy. EnwiO's tariff is up to ten cents per kilowatt hour below the usual market prices, which eases the burden on consumers' wallets and at the same time promotes the switch to green electricity. Loud MDR In the unified municipality of Osterburg, ten times more electricity is produced than is actually consumed.
Energiewerke Osterburg, which launched this new electricity market together with Bayernwerk Regio Energie, relies on locally generated energy from wind and photovoltaic systems. The managing director of Energiewerke, Heiko Karg, emphasizes that this tariff can also be adapted to specific towns or streets. This shows that not only comprehensive solutions are offered here, but also tailor-made offers for the benefit of citizens.
A future-oriented approach
The cooperation agreement to set up the EnwiO markets was signed on June 12, 2025. This step is no coincidence, as the idea is to offer locally generated and directly consumed electricity, similar to regional food. This not only supports the local economy, but also creates a closer connection between consumers and producers. As of now, Energiewerke Osterburg GmbH and Bayernwerk Regio Energie GmbH have already held discussions with various local system operators in order to feed their electricity into the new market, reports MyNewsDesk.
Mayor Nico Schulz sums it up: Local energy supply not only has economic advantages, it also increases awareness and acceptance of the energy transition among the population. People should feel that they are part of this important development through the regional market.
The context of the energy transition
The efforts in Osterburg are in line with the nationwide strategy to promote renewable energies. As the Federal Ministry of Economics shows in a report, the share of renewable energies plays a crucial role in achieving climate goals in Germany. In 2024, around 18.1% of final energy consumption for heating and cooling is expected to come from renewable sources. Although the proportion of biomass use is declining, the use of heat pumps has increased by 15%. This development shows that the trend towards sustainability is clearly visible, as shown on the website Federal Ministry of Economics can be read.
The new electricity market in Osterburg not only makes a significant contribution to the local supply of green energy. It is also an important step to pave the way for further regional initiatives in Saxony-Anhalt and to exploit the potential ofrenewable electricityto fully exploit.
