Voluntary integration: Halle relies on refugees as city designers!
The integration of refugees has become more important in recent years, and new approaches can bring a breath of fresh air. A current example from Halle shows what pragmatic solutions can look like. The FDP city council group has presented an interesting model that is based on successful projects in the Saale district. This aims to enable refugees to volunteer in charitable activities such as park maintenance or helping at the food bank. Andreas Silbersack, chairman of the FDP parliamentary group, emphasizes: “Work is a key to integration.” Through these measures, refugees could not only gain valuable everyday structure and language skills, but also actively contribute to improving their environment.
One point that is important in this discussion: The city of Halle would be relieved through these voluntary commitments without the need for new financial resources. Instead, the FDP relies on the intelligent use of existing resources and the existing structures, such as the “Order & Cleanliness” task force, in which voluntary refugees are already active. City councilor Tim Kehrwieder emphasizes that integration begins in everyday life and does not require coercive measures. Rather, this approach is intended to be an invitation to help shape and participate.
Successful examples in the Saale district
In the Saalekreis, where similar projects are already running successfully, refugees receive support in various areas. There, volunteer refugees are involved, among other things, in cleaning paths and parks as well as with charitable organizations. The Network for Migration and Integration in the Saalekreis acts as a platform for actors who are committed to the integration of migrants. This cooperation is seen as an opportunity to use the diverse skills of immigrants and to strengthen cooperation between locals and migrants.
The network offers an advice and information platform that enables everyone to participate. It is based on the state integration concept of 2021 and promotes tolerance and appreciation of cultural diversity, an important prerequisite for harmonious coexistence.
Integration as an opportunity
The challenges that refugees face in a new country are diverse. Not only do they have to get used to new processes and behaviors, but they also often have to deal with the concerns and fears of the population. Trust in public authorities is therefore essential. Positive social and economic change can be brought about by well-supported shelter seekers who are able to give back to society more than was invested in their integration. This underlines the importance of information and participation in the integration process - topics that also have high priority for UN refugee aid.
Special support is particularly necessary for unaccompanied minor refugees, as they often feel alone and overwhelmed. A common understanding that takes both the fears of the population and the needs of refugees seriously is crucial for successful integration.
In summary, it can be said that it is time to take up sensible and voluntary integration models like those of the FDP in Halle. The approaches that have already been tested in the Saalekreis offer valuable insights and can benefit not only refugees, but society as a whole.
