Big cat sighting at Geiseltalsee: Police warn of dangerous puma!

Excitement in Braunsbedra, Saxony-Anhalt: A sighting of a large cat at Geiseltalsee is causing concern for residents and is also making a name for itself beyond the region. Sabine Faulstich, head of the Saale district's public order department, confirmed that it was a real animal and recommended caution in the area using the Nina emergency app. A comprehensive search operation is organized around the Braunsbedra Marina, especially on Monday evening, after passers-by filmed a large animal over the weekend. Experts analyzed the available video material and agree: It could possibly be a puma, but it remains unclear to roughly identify the species. All this reported Merseburg newspapers.

The search operation was initiated immediately. Police and emergency services from the veterinary office are on site and searched the area with a helicopter from 8:30 p.m. It is conceivable that the animal stays nearby for a few days after feeding before it starts moving again. The Geiseltalsee, a flooded open-cast brown coal mine and one of the largest artificial lakes in Germany, is not a zoo. This particular fact is worrying many residents who have been urged to avoid the area and report sightings to 112 immediately. Onlookers nevertheless gathered in the hope of catching a glimpse of the mysterious animal.

Precautions and signs of a return of the big cats

Historically, there was already a similar alert in 2021 regarding a privately kept leopard roaming the region. However, the authorities currently have no information about missing big cats, which is why inquiries are also planned to private owners and animal parks. Regarding the return of wild cats, lynxes or wolves, it is noted that these animals are gradually being spotted again in German forests. At the same time, experts warn not to approach the animal and recommend keeping dogs on a leash when walking in the forest. If sightings occur, they should be documented and reported to the relevant authorities. Also Swabian Post emphasizes the importance of appropriate rules of conduct to ensure the handling of these wild animals.

The authorities remain confident that they can resolve the situation as quickly as possible. After further discussions to coordinate the search on Tuesday morning, the population will continue to be informed about the situation. Aside from the great excitement, it is also an amazing testament to nature's adaptability that such a majestic animal like the puma could be spotted in the region. People are called upon to treat nature and its creatures with care and respect - then nothing will stand in the way of peaceful coexistence.
