Hot weather threatens Halle: risk of forest fires increases dramatically!

The current temperatures in Germany are tough - the heat and dryness are leading to a worrying increase in the risk of forest and field fires. Halle and the Saale district are particularly badly affected, where the warning levels have already been raised. MZ reports that there was recently an incident near Spickendorf that illustrates the alarming situation.

The topic of forest fires is not a phenomenon limited to Germany. The situation is similar in Austria. Researchers of the University of Graz investigate the influence of climate change on the risk of forest fires, which has increasingly increased in recent years. National data shows that over 4,600 forest fires were registered in Austria from 1993 to 2023. The year 2022 set a sad record with five major fires and around 1,000 hectares of land burned. The situation has already become critical in 2025, as two major fires have already occurred with around 430 hectares of terrain affected.

A look at the causes

The reasons for this increase are diverse. Heavy rain, often increased by climate change, does not necessarily reduce the risk of fires because the dry forest floor does not retain enough water. In addition, the mild winters have led to an increase in the bark beetle population, which further increases tree death and the risk of fire. Quarks points to the importance of an ecological approach - less intensive farming could create more dead wood, which can be used as fuel but also store carbon and promote biodiversity.

Prevention measures

In order to counteract the impending risk of forest fires, it is essential to take appropriate measures. An educational campaign called “Brennpunkt Wald” provides clear rules for forest fire prevention:

  • Kein offenes Feuer im Wald oder in Waldnähe entzünden.
  • Grillen nur auf freigegebenen Grillplätzen erlaubt.
  • Rauchen im Wald ist von März bis Oktober untersagt; in sechs Bundesländern sogar ganzjährig.
  • Keine glimmenden Zigaretten aus dem Auto werfen.

For safety, it is also important not to park cars on dry grass to avoid fires from hot catalytic converters.

Cities and municipalities are already reacting to the increasing dangers: firefighters are adapting to the new challenges and working to inform citizens about the risks and necessary preventive measures. There was also recently a personnel change in the Mitbürger/Volt faction in the Halle city council, where city councilor Detlef Wend resigned from his mandate, which could further change the political landscape.

Amid these challenges, there were also positive news. Charlott Josefin Heinze from Halle was booked internationally as a model for the beauty brand Estée Lauder, a ray of hope in a time marked by natural hazards and climate change.

To get to the point: There's something going on! It is high time to be vigilant and take the necessary measures to protect our forests and nature.
