Saxony-Anhalt demands billions for better disaster protection!

Saxony-Anhalt demands billions for better disaster protection!

In recent years, the situation in disaster protection has increasingly changed in Germany. The threat from forest fires is not only a local, but also a national problem. Today, on July 17, 2025, several federal states and experts emphasize the urgency of investments in forest fire fighting and population protection. In particular, the Interior Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Tamara Zieschang, calls on the Federal Government to provide the municipalities more support.

Zieschang is committed to targeted measures to strengthen the infrastructure for forest fire prevention. This includes, among other things, the proposal that emergency power units are installed in construction work in schools. In the event of a disaster, these institutions should serve as stable starting points. But the situation is not only tense in Saxony-Anhalt. Municipalities from all over Germany have signaled increased financial needs to ensure the safety of the population.

uniform fight against forest fires

The cross -border cooperation between various aid organizations such as the Technical Relief Agency (THW), the fire brigade and the police beat waves. Specific measures are required to improve digital networking and shelter planning, which is particularly important in rural regions. There is also an dissatisfied situation in North Rhine-Westphalia: According to a survey of the WDR magazine Westpol, only two out of 18 independent cities rate the personnel and financial resources for their forest fire protection as "sufficient". The dissatisfaction with the support of the country in this regard is noticeable.

Some circles such as Wuppertal and the Rheinisch-Bergische Kreis emphasize the need to improve the infrastructure. Wuppertal is calling for financial resources for fire water infrastructure, while the Rheinisch-Bergische Kreis warns the expansion of air support for fire fighting. With the increasing risk of fire, which becomes even more intensive due to the climate changes, the claims of the municipalities concerned also grow to nationwide coordinated campaigns to clarify the population.

research and innovation in the service of forest protection

In the course of the efforts to ensure more security, research also plays a crucial role. The Climate Action Research Lab (Carl) from the University of Freiburg actively examines strategies for decarbonization and adaptation to the consequences of climate change. Under the direction of Dr. Moritz Wussow is evaluated there how effective different protective measures are and which technological innovations can contribute to forest fire prevention. This multidisciplinary research group works closely with international institutions to find the best solutions.

The support of experts is therefore essential to meet the challenges of climate change and the rising forest fire risks. The demands for a quick action are getting louder, because time is pushing. Political decision -makers are now asked to act in order to provide the necessary funds for effective disaster protection.
