Postal break in the Salzland district: letters from the authorities arrive much too late!
In the Salzland district, postal communication is currently being put to the test. Delays of up to several weeks in mail delivery are no longer uncommon. This particularly applies to important official letters that set deadlines. As mdr.de reports, Deutsche Post has cited high levels of sickness and vacation periods as the causes of these problems, especially in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.
Christian Löffler, the state chairman of the Association of Judges and Prosecutors in Saxony-Anhalt, expresses concern about the situation. He explains that many courts carry out service using a postal certificate of service. This document is important because it documents when a letter was delivered and therefore the deadlines begin to run from this date. The Halle city administration now also uses electronic communication to inform its citizens in a timely manner, especially when delays are expected.
Changes in postal law
It also gets exciting when you take a look at the recent reforms in postal law. In 2025, the law to modernize postal law came into force, the aim of which was to adapt postal deliveries to modern communication habits. This project, which brak.de examines in more detail, has introduced new transit times for standard letters. In the future, these will generally be delivered within three to four working days - a significant extension compared to the previous deadline of one to two working days.
Deutsche Post wants to ensure that 95% of all letters arrive within three days and 99% within four days. But the advertising promises could prove challenging given the current situation. The postage for standard letters has also increased by ten cents to 0.95 euros. Particularly urgent shipments can be sent faster for an additional charge.
Legal deadlines at risk
The extended terms also have an impact on statutory delivery and notification fictions. For example, the deadline for administrative acts and court decisions will be increased from three to four working days. This topic has already been discussed in the Bundestag, which launched a reform on June 13, 2024. Over 70 MPs from the government factions SPD, Alliance 90/The Greens and FDP voted for the necessary changes, while the CDU/CSU and AfD spoke out against the reform.
Other aspects of the reform include a so-called labeling requirement for heavy parcels and a reduction in the upper limit for parcels from 31.5 kg to 20 kg per delivery. The Federal Network Agency also receives expanded powers to monitor postal service providers.
Overall, the postal landscape is facing major challenges and changes. Given the current delivery problems, it will be exciting to see how these reforms work in practice and whether the desired improvements actually materialize.
