On November 7, 2025, the Salzlandkreis can celebrate another victory in the long-standing legal dispute over the sale of the Salzland Clinics. How MDR reported, the Federal Court of Justice has rejected the complaint of the clinic operator Ameos against a ruling by the Naumburg Higher Regional Court. This means that Ameos now has to pay around six million euros to the Salzlandkreis.
The dispute over the second installment of the purchase price, which is related to the sale of the Salzland Clinics in 2011, has been dragging on for several years. The purchase price at that time was a maximum of 48 million euros, which was to be paid in two installments. While the first installment of 26 million euros had already been paid, the amount of the second installment was not fixed and should depend on the annual balance in the year of sale.
Lengthy legal dispute
At the end of 2022, an independent appraiser determined that the Salzlandkreis was entitled to a further 3.8 million euros in addition to the first installment, plus interest of around 2.2 million euros. This was confirmed by both the Magdeburg Regional Court and the Naumburg Higher Regional Court and was ultimately also approved by the Federal Court of Justice.
District Administrator Markus Bauer (SPD) expressed his relief after the BGH's decision and emphasized the now clarity about the amount of the second installment. However, the legal process has not yet been completed for Ameos, according to a spokeswoman for Ameos Nord, who did not want to comment further due to the ongoing proceedings.
Ameos in the Salzland district
Ameos operates a total of four locations in the Salzland district, including Bernburg, Aschersleben, Schönebeck and Staßfurt. With a total of eleven locations in Saxony-Anhalt and around 4,100 employees, Ameos is one of the largest private clinic operators in German-speaking countries and is a major employer in the region.
The latest developments in this matter show once again how important transparency and legal certainty are for the financial stability of a region. The Salzlandkreis has apparently shown a good hand and taken another step towards clarification and security in the healthcare system.
