A1 in Hamburg: full closure ended - traffic jam chaos remains!
The good news for all drivers: The full closure of the A1 motorway in Hamburg, which had been in force since early Monday morning, has now been lifted. This means that the affected section between the Hamburg-Billstedt junction and the Norderelbe motorway triangle is passable again. This measure came about as a result of renovation work by Deutsche Bahn on the Moorfleet Tunnel, which passes under the closed Hamburg-Berlin railway line and the S-Bahn line between the main station and Bergedorf. How NDR reports, the diversion during the closure was a real game of patience, as traffic in the direction of Lübeck/Berlin and Bremen was backed up for kilometers on Saturday afternoon.
The underlying works were necessary to keep the Tunnel Moorfleet safe and modern. Loud autobahn.de Deutsche Bahn's volume requirements required concrete renovation work, while Autobahn GmbH simultaneously carried out maintenance and repair work in the tunnel as well as repairs to the asphalt surface layer.
Diversion measures and traffic information
There were extensive diversions for everyone affected. Motorists heading north were redirected from AD Norderelbe via the A255, B75 and B5 to AS Hamburg-Billstedt. Anyone coming from the south, for example from the direction of Wilhelmsburger Reichstrasse, also had to take the diversion via B75. And in the south direction there were also various diversion options from the AS Hamburg-Billstedt via the B5 or A255, such as autobahn.de reported.
A small ray of hope: The S2 S-Bahn line was not affected by the work at the weekend and was able to run without restrictions. As Autobahn GmbH emphasized in its reports, this closure was also used to repair the road in the Moorfleet tunnel and to replace the transition structures on the Norderel Bridge. The A1 is one of the busiest motorways in Germany and is very important for traffic between the Baltic Sea region and Hamburg.
Investments in infrastructure
These measures are part of a larger plan. The federal government recently approved 1.1 billion euros for renovation work on the motorway infrastructure BMV let it be announced. These funds are part of a new special fund for infrastructure and climate protection and are extremely important for maintaining the transport infrastructure in our country. With a total of 166 billion euros by 2029, the government is pursuing the goal of further modernizing key transport axes such as the A1.
For all drivers and commuters in the region, one thing remains clear: Despite the disruptions, the traffic infrastructure has made clear progress and the tense traffic conditions should soon ease again. So be careful, stay patient and have a good trip on your next trip!
